"Dirty" crypto: why buying USDT can get your card or account frozen

Verificato il:

A bank or wallet freezes an account when it sees money of unclear origin: third-party transfers, frequent P2P deals with strangers, receipts linked to fraud. "Dirty" is what people call USDT or pesos that have passed through stolen funds, fraud schemes or sanctioned addresses. You can lower the risk by paying and receiving money only from an account in your counterparty's name, working through registered services and keeping proof of each deal. This is information, not legal advice.

Why does the bank look at my crypto transactions at all?

Banks and payment services in Argentina are "obligated entities" under the anti-money-laundering law (Ley 25.246) and report to the UIF (Unidad de Información Financiera). They must identify the customer, monitor their transactions according to risk and report suspicious transactions to the UIF "sin demora alguna" (without any delay) (arts. 20-21 of Ley 25.246 as amended by Ley 27.739). Since March 2024, virtual asset service providers (PSAV, art. 20 item 13) are expressly on the list of obligated entities; the CNV keeps their register.

How to check your counterparty in a USDT deal

What to avoid in USDT deals

What to do if your account has already been frozen: • Contact the bank through an official channel and ask which documents it needs. • Prepare proof: your deal history on the exchange, correspondence, your counterparties' details, statements. • Don't open new accounts for the same operations until the matter is resolved. • First file a formal complaint with the bank and keep its number. If there is no reply after 10 working days, or the reply doesn't satisfy you, complain to the BCRA online (bcra.gob.ar, "Reclamar por productos o servicios financieros"; the BCRA is the second instance). • For a large sum, or if you were drawn into a fraud scheme, contact a lawyer. This is information, not advice.
