Is tap water safe to drink in Buenos Aires?
核实日期:
Yes: in Buenos Aires (CABA) tap water is considered potable. It is supplied by the state company AySA, which treats water from the Río de la Plata and the underground aquifer and monitors quality at every stage. But the chlorine taste and the condition of the pipes and the tank in your building are a separate matter: if the water smells or the building has old pipes, install a filter or drink bottled water.
Where does the water come from and who is responsible?
Water in CABA and in 26 municipalities of the first ring of Buenos Aires province is supplied by AySA (Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos). It is drawn from the Río de la Plata and the Puelche aquifer and treated at three river-water treatment plants (General San Martín, General Belgrano, Juan Manuel de Rosas) and 27 groundwater plants; groundwater is about 13 % of the total supply (aysa.com.ar). AySA states that it carries out three systematic checks during treatment and tests the water at the inlet, during the process, at the outlet of the plants and in the distribution network.
Why does water sometimes taste or smell of chlorine?
Chlorine is added so that the water stays safe on its way through the pipes. A chlorine smell on its own doesn't mean the water is bad. The AySA website has no official recommendations for removing the taste (the "Calidad del agua" sections and user questions, 06.10.2026) — if the taste bothers you, a filter helps.
Where can water go bad before the tap?
AySA water reaches the building, and from there a lot depends on the house:
- The rooftop tank (tanque). In most apartment buildings water goes through tanks. In buildings under horizontal property ownership this is regulated by City Law 6040 (2018): the consorcio approves a plan for cleaning and disinfecting the tanks (the frequency is recorded in the minutes book) and has the water tested bacteriologically and physico-chemically at least once a year; if the test is bad, the tanks are cleaned within 15 working days. The old Ordinance 45.593 (cleaning every six months) was repealed by this law. Ask the building administration (administración del consorcio) for the record of the last cleaning and the latest test.
- Old pipes in old buildings can produce rust and sediment.
- Outages and repairs: after a shutoff the water may run cloudy — let it run.
Do I need a filter for tap water?
It is a personal choice, not a necessity. A filter (a jug, a tap attachment or an under-sink system) improves the taste and removes sediment if the pipes are old. It is important to change the cartridges on time — otherwise the filter itself becomes a source of bacteria. If you doubt the water quality in a particular apartment, you can order a water test from a private laboratory (we don't name specific laboratories).
What should I know about bottled water in Argentina?
Bottled water is sold everywhere; large bottles (bidones) with delivery and a dispenser are popular in offices and apartments. It is convenient if the building has old pipes or you dislike the taste, but from a safety standpoint it is not necessary for most apartments in CABA.
What is tap water like outside CABA?
AySA serves CABA and 26 partidos of the suburbs (aysa.com.ar). In the suburbs, ask your landlord whether the house is connected to the AySA network or whether the water comes from a borehole: AySA does not monitor the quality of borehole water — if in doubt, get a test done.
Is water served in restaurants?
Under Buenos Aires rules, if a restaurant charges a cover (cubierto), it must include a glass of drinking water per person (see the article "Argentine food for beginners").
